The Yangon region government has announced a 10 pm-4 am curfew for all Yangon townships effective April 18.

The announcement comes after the Myanmar government on April 16 banned gatherings of five and above following a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Action will be taken in the event of failure to comply with the new rules. 

“This represents the whole of Yangon. The main reason is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as well as to control other security problems such as crime that may arise as a result of the spike in cases,” said  Daw Soe Pa Pa, MP of Pabedan township.

She added that the people need to cooperate with the order to help the authorities control the spread of the virus. 

U Lin Naing Myint, MP of  Kamaryut township said frustration among people forced to stay at home over Thingyan is building up, and warned there could be an increase in crime after the holidays, thereby warranting the curfew.

Mandalay and Sagaing regions have also imposed similar curfews in the past week.
